Minister Louis Paul Motaze grants audience to Vera Songwe

The Minister of Finance, Louis Paul Motaze, granted audience to Vera Songwe, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa, this Wednesday, August 18, 2021.

          Talking to the press after a tête-à-tête in close doors by the dwo, Mrs Vera Songwe disclossed that, her organization has been working hand in hand with the Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union to get a vaccine for the African continent to halt the propagation of the Corona virus pandemic. Of which Cameroon received its stock last Friday, August 14.

          She stressed that, they want to ensure the delivery was safe and that Cameroonians receive the vaccine to atleast 10% by the end of September this year. And that, she is convinced that by the end of the year this should go up to 20%. According to her, about 80% of those who contract the virus and die, are those who are not vaccinated and as such, getting vaccinated is the only way out during this health crisis.

          Their discussion also dwelled on, Job, Employment and Economic Development which they discused on how to work on different potentials to come out of the crisis. Finally, as regards Women, Internet and Technology, she said that a training program was carried out three weeks ago in Douala, Buea and Yaounde, organised by the Economic Commission for Africa in order to raise the potentials of women in particular. The Cilicon Mountain was another area of interest, which is a power house in Cameroon for artificial intelligence, robotics and the internet of films but, all these require the right infrastructure. The discussion between her and the Minister focussed on the release of the potentials to stock in the broad band, so that the internet can be cheapper in order to enable the youths creat jobs for themselves.

          Vera Songwe is the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and the 9th serving Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Africa’s premier thought leadership institution focused on generating knowledge and applying policy research in support of accelerated economic diversification and structural transformation. Following her appointment, she became the first woman to lead the institution in the organisation’s 60-year history and the highest-ranking United Nations regional official.
